Background of the Study

Psycholinguistic strategies are critical for effective language comprehension, particularly during reading tasks where the integration of visual and linguistic cues is essential. In Igbo, a language characterized by rich tonal and syntactic features, readers often employ a variety of cognitive strategies to decode meaning from text. This study appraises the psycholinguistic strategies employed by Igbo readers, focusing on processes such as predictive coding, context utilization, and inferential reasoning (Ike, 2023). Research shows that proficient readers not only rely on phonological decoding but also on semantic and syntactic cues to enhance comprehension. However, the unique characteristics of Igbo—such as its tonal variations and idiomatic expressions—may require specific cognitive strategies that differ from those used in more standardized languages (Chukwuma, 2024). By examining reading comprehension through experimental tasks and eye-tracking studies, this research aims to identify the most effective strategies that facilitate meaning construction in Igbo. The study will also explore the impact of these strategies on reading speed and accuracy, thereby informing the development of improved literacy programs tailored to Igbo language learners (Eze, 2025).

Statement of the Problem

Although psycholinguistic strategies play a key role in language comprehension, current models often overlook the specific strategies employed during Igbo reading tasks. Existing assessments are predominantly based on Western languages and do not account for the tonal and syntactic complexities inherent in Igbo. As a result, there is a gap in understanding how Igbo readers integrate contextual and inferential cues during reading. This lack of targeted research hinders the development of effective literacy interventions that address the unique challenges of Igbo language comprehension (Ike, 2023; Chukwuma, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

1. To identify psycholinguistic strategies used by Igbo readers during comprehension tasks.

2. To assess the effectiveness of these strategies on reading speed and accuracy.

3. To propose literacy interventions that incorporate effective strategies.

Research Questions:

1. What psycholinguistic strategies are predominantly used in Igbo reading comprehension?

2. How do these strategies affect reading performance?

3. What interventions can enhance comprehension in Igbo language learners?

Significance of the Study :

This study is significant as it provides an in-depth evaluation of psycholinguistic strategies in Igbo reading comprehension, offering insights that can improve literacy instruction and language acquisition. The findings will inform educators and curriculum developers in designing targeted interventions that support effective reading strategies in Igbo (Ike, 2023; Eze, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:

This study is limited to examining psycholinguistic strategies in Igbo reading tasks using behavioral and eye-tracking assessments, without extending to oral comprehension.

Definitions of Terms:

• Psycholinguistic Strategies: Cognitive methods employed to process and understand language.

• Reading Comprehension: The ability to derive meaning from written text.

• Inferential Reasoning: The process of drawing conclusions based on contextual cues.
